The Grey Nuns Structural Study Committee established to evaluate the continuing sponsorship of heath care facilities by the Grey Nuns.
1983
The study resulted in the decision to establish the Grey Nuns Health System.
1) to ensure the continuation of the mission and philosophy within the Grey Nuns' sponsored institutions;
2) to strengthen the health ministry within the church and the congregation; and
3) to assure the viability of the existing corporations within the system as well as welcome additional corporations to affiliate with the system.
1986
Name changed from the Grey Nuns Health System to Covenant Health Systems.
This new name "represents our willingness to relate to a broad spectrum of heath care organizations, while re-emphasizing our commitment to the poor and needy."
1987
Fanny Allen Hospital, sponsored by the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph, becomes Covenant's first affiliate organization
1990
Canonization - Marguerite d'Youville, foundress of the Grey Nuns, is canonized by Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Basilica, Rome. Representatives from Covenant member organizations join the Grey Nuns from around the world for the ceremony of extraordinary solemnity.
Covenant produces "A Woman of Her Time, A Woman of Our Time," on the life of St. Marguerite.
1991
The Church sets aside October l6 as the official liturgical feast day of St. Marguerite d'Youville.
1st St. Marguerite d'Youville Humanitarian Award awarded to Sr. Jose Hobday.
1992
The Sisters of Charity of St. Hyacinthe transfer sponsorship of the entities comprising the Sisters of Charity Health System in Lewiston, Maine to the Sisters of Charity of Montreal and Covenant Health Systems.
Sr. Bernadette Poirier, Superior General of the Grey Nuns visits the United States and says of her visit: "I was tremendously impressed by the sense of 'mission' that prevails in each institution and the individual ministries. I was privileged to witness the dedication of our lay collaborators to the mission of the Grey Nuns which is 'alive and well'..Everywhere I went I became more deeply aware of the truth of our congregation's mission statement: "We are called to minister in partnership with our contemporaries, empowering one another to carry the mission into the future.. Together we will respond creatively to the urgent, unmet needs of society, as we participate in the building of a world more human and free."

Sponsorship Discernment Process looking at options for future of the Grey Nuns healthcare ministries advancing

Sponsorship Transfer Plan - proposes the healthcare institutions of the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, "Grey Nuns" in the United States be transferred to Covenant Health Systems and that Covenant Health Systems be constituted a Public Juridic Person of Pontifical Right in order to assume sponsorship
Marguerite's Place, a ministry begun by the five Grey Nun branches in the United States opens in Nashua, New Hampshire.
1995
Letter of Intent to transfer sponsorship to Covenant endorsed by CHS Board
Talks begin with Mercy Health System, Toledo, Ohio, regarding the transfer of St. Vincent Medical Center to Mercy Health System.
Permission obtained from the General Administration to convert the Provincial House in Lexington, MA into an assisted living residence
Petition sent to Rome to constitute Covenant Health Systems a Public Juridic Person of Pontifical Right and to transfer the healthcare facilities of the Grey Nuns to CHS.
Sr. Dorothy Cooper reports that Sr. Bernadette Poirier and she had had a very successful meeting in Rome with Sr. Sharon Holland and were told to pursue the petition for the transfer. She congratulated the Board on their willingness to take on the responsibilities of Covenant as a PJPP.
August 18.Sr. June Ketterer announces that she has received favorable response from the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in Rome to effect the transfer of the Grey Nuns' healthcare ministries in the United States to Covenant Health Systems. The Grey Nuns will begin to work towards full implementation of the transfer which is expected to take a year.
"Passing the Torch," a year-long leadership development program for all management to assume new responsibilities as Juridic Person begins.
Youville Place Assisted Living Residence to be owned and operated by the Grey Nuns
Charities, Inc. and managed by Covenant.
1996
Letter of Intent signed with Optima Health to form Optima Healthcare including St. Joseph Hospital in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Maristhill Nursing Home transferred from the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary to Covenant Health Systems
October 24 Transfer of sponsorship of the Grey Nuns' healthcare ministries to Covenant Health Systems.
"We, the Covenant Health systems Board of Directors, do unanimously accept sponsorship of the Grey Nuns' healthcare ministries in the United States as we become a public juridic person of pontifical right by virtue of decree granted by the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life in Rome. We pledge to promote and foster the continuation and growth of Catholic healthcare in the spirit of St. Marguerite d'Youville to reflect Catholic values, holistic health and compassionate caring with special reverence for the poor and underserved."

Today, the United States Region of the Grey Nuns is called "St. Joseph Region." The Sisters live and minister in Ohio, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts and their apostolic endeavors are administered under a Regional Superior, Sr. Jeanne Poor, a Regional Assistant, Sr. Helene Georges, and a Regional Treasurer/Secretary, Sr. Dorothy Cooper.
